Prof. Dr. Taner Şengün

Biography

He was born in Elazığ in 1972. He completed his primary, secondary, and high school education in Elazığ. He graduated from the Department of Geography at Fırat University Faculty of Science and Literature in 1996. Moreover, in 1996, he began teaching geography at Tuzla Anatolian Technical High School which was a Japanese project school under the name of JICA Istanbul. He served as a geography teacher at this school for 2 years. Furthermore, between 1998 and 1999, he worked as a geography teacher at Elazığ Karşıyaka High School. In 1998, he started his master's degree in the Department of Physical Geography at the Institute of Social Sciences at Fırat University. In January 1999, he was appointed as a research assistant in the Department of Physical Geography, Faculty of Science and Literature, at Fırat University. In 2000, he completed his master's thesis titled "Relationships between Geomorphological Main Units and Land Use in Uluova." In 2007, he completed his doctoral thesis titled "Natural Environment-Human Relations and Natural Environmental Planning in the Harput Plateau." In 2007, he became an assistant professor, and in 2012, he became an associate professor. In 2019, he became a professor in the Department of Geography at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Fırat University. He has been working as an academician in the Department of Geography at Fırat University for 24 years. From 2014 to 2021, he served as the Vice Chairman of the Geography Department. Since 2021, he has been serving as the Chairman of the Department of Geography at Fırat University. Additionally, since 2020, he has been holding the position of Director of the School of Social Sciences at Fırat University. He continues to fulfill responsibilities such as being the Head of Department, Faculty Board member, Vocational School Board member, and Senate member. He is married and has two children.

He has a total of 120 publications, including 25 articles published in national and international peer-reviewed journals, 75 papers presented at national and international scientific conferences and published in conference proceedings, 3 published books, 9 international book chapter contributions, and 11 completed projects.

He conducts research on topics such as human-environment relationships, land use, desert dust, climate relations in reservoir lakes, natural environment, geomorphology, ecology, geographic information systems, urban green spaces, medicinal plants, plant geography, natural environment, and tourism planning. He is also the academician who made the first discovery of Elazığ's Saklıkapı Canyon and introduced it to the scientific community nationally and internationally.
