Biography
He completed his primary and secondary education in İspir. He received his undergraduate degree from Istanbul University, Faculty of Letters, Department of Geography in 2004; his master's degree, which he started in 2008 at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, Social Sciences Institute, Department of Geography, with the thesis titled “Water Potential and Sustainable Management of Hatay Province” in 2010 and he completed his doctorate, which he started in the same year at Istanbul University, Institute of Social Sciences, Department of Geography, in 2014 with the thesis titled “Hydrographic Planning of the Karasu Stream Basin”. Starting his academic career at Hatay Mustafa Kemal University, Faculty of Science and Letters, Geography Department, Physical Geography, where he was appointed as a research assistant in 2008 Karataş, worked as an assist. prof. in the same unit between 2014-2016. He was appointed as an assist. prof. to the Marmara University, Faculty of Science and Literature, Geography Department, Physical Geography and served as the Deputy Head of the Department between 2016-2023. He still continues to work as a faculty member in the same unit, and since 2020, he has been the Head of the Department of Geography of the Turkic World at Marmara University, Institute of Turkic Studies, and the Head of the Department of Physical Geography, Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Geography Department. Karataş, who received the title of assoc. prof. in the field of physical geography in 2020, continues his scientific studies in the fields of hydrography, water management, hydrographic planning, hydropolitics, fluvial geomorphology and tectonic geomorphology. Karataş is the author of many books, chapters, international and national articles, papers and scientific publications related to his field of study. He teaches courses on hydrography, geomorphology, climatology, cartography, vegetation geography, zoogeography, natural disasters, morphotectonics, petrography, hydropolitics, Turkish World geography, historical geography, archaeogeomorphology, paleogeography at undergraduate and graduate level, and directs graduate-postgraduate theses.
