Prof. Dr. Barbaros Gönençgil   

İlk ve Ortaöğretim dönemi Anadoluhisarı'nda geçmiştir. 1983-87 döneminde İstanbul Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Coğrafya Bölümünde eğitimini tamamlamıştır. Yine aynı üniversitede Deniz Bilimleri ve Coğrafya Enstitüsü’nde Korkut Ata Sungur danışmanlığında Klimatoloji – Meteoroloji Bilim Dalında, 1989'da yüksek lisansını, 1993'te doktorasını tamamlamıştır. Aynı yıl Deniz Bilimleri ve İşletmeciliği Enstitüsü'nde araştırma görevli olmuş 1999 yılında İstanbul Üniversitesi Edebiyat Fakültesi Coğrafya Bölümüne geçmiştir 

2002 yılında Yardımcı Doçent, 2003'te Doçent ve 2011'de Profesör unvanlarını almıştır. 2012'den bu yana Fiziki Coğrafya Ana Bilim Dalı, 2013'ten bu yana Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü İklim Değişikliği Ana Bilim Dalı ve 2015'ten bu yana Sosyal Bilimler Enstitüsü Coğrafya Ana Bilim Dalı ve Edebiyat Fakültesi Coğrafya Bölüm Başkanlığı görevlerini yürütmektedir. Ayrıca İ.Ü. Açık ve Uzaktan Eğitim Fakültesi Coğrafya Programı koordinatörlüğünü de yürütmektedir.

Prof. Dr. Gönençgil'in çalışma alanları iklim ve çevre üzerine yoğunlaşmaktadır. 2007 yılında Almanya Leipzig Üniversitesi Fizik ve Yerbilimleri Fakültesi Coğrafya Enstitüsünde Socrates/Erasmus Öğretim Elemanı Hareketliliği Programında misafir öğretim üyesi olarak bulundu. 2019 ve 2022 yıllarında Fransa’da, Sorbonne ve Paris 8 Üniversitelerinde misafir öğretim üyesi olarak bulundu.

Ayrıca Uluslararası Coğrafya Birliği Başkan Yardımcılığı görevini yürütmüş, 2022 yılında da Uluslararası Coğrafya Birliği Genel Sekreterliği'ne seçilmiştir. 23 Haziran 2023 tarihinde Türk Coğrafya Kurumu başkanlığına seçilmiştir.

In 1987, Barbaros Gönençgil graduated from İstanbul University Department of Geography. He received his master's degree and doctorate on Climatology at the University of İstanbul. He is currently the head of Geography Department, the head of Physical Geography Division in Geography Department and Open and Distance Education Faculty Geography Programme of İstanbul University. Prof. Gönençgil is also the founder and the head of the Climate Change Division in İstanbul University Social Sciences Institute.

Prof. Dr. Gönençgil’s study areas concentrate on climate and environment. He was a visiting professor in Socrates/Erasmus Teaching Staff Mobility Programme in University of Leipzig, Germany in Faculty of Physics and Geosciences, Institute of Geography in 2007. He was also visiting professor at Sorbonne and Paris 8 Universities in 2018 and 2022.

Prof. Dr. Gönençgil is the editor of the Journal of Turkish Geography and Journal of Geography. He has taken part in several trainings for Geography teachers, organized by Turkish Geographical Society. Prof. Dr. Gönençgil has volunteered for many years in non-governmental organizations related with the environment. He is one of the founders of the Turkish Foundation for Environmental Education, which is a member of the International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). He is a volunteer member of another environmental association in Turkey, namely the Turkish Environmental and Woodlands Protection Society, founded in 1972. He was the chair of this society between the years of 2003 – 2012.

Since 2010, Prof. Dr. Gönençgil has been attending the IGU conferences and congresses.  Besides, he is member of Climatology and Mountain Commissions of IGU. He served as IGU Vice President between 2016 -2021, he is still Secretary General of IGU.
